Driving in Turkey is uncomplicated.

The main roads are very good and clearly signposted in English. There is little chance of getting lost as there are not that many roads so unless you head down dirt tracks you are likely to end up some where interesting.

The major considerations are to make sure that you look out for motorcyclists and oncoming vehicles overtaking.

Kalkan Transport and Car Hire Information

Kalkan transport consists of taxis, hire cars and Dolmus (mini bus).

The taxis and the Dolmus leave from the same point at the entrance to the village. You will pass this area often as its the main road leading out of the mostly pedestrianised streets of the village. The post office and bank are also located here.

Taxis

Taxis are cheap by English standards and abundant. It seems that every turkish fisherman has given up his trade to buy a taxi. There is a system that makes sure they all get a share of the trade so it doesn't really matter who you approach, you will be directed to a taxi and off you go.

Car Hire

Numerous places offer car hire so there is a fair amount of competition. It is difficult to say who offers the best value as this changes. The thing to look out for is the insurance. Make sure that you definitely have insurance as there are some agents who discount their vehicles through not insuring.

As a guide price you should expect to pay about £160 for a car for the week.

Hiring from the airport for the week may save you the transport to Kalkan but there may also be a premium as there is no competition. The new airport is now secure and so companies are paying for the privilege of keeping the competition out. It is usually cheapest to arrange the car hire through and agent in Kalkan and get their drivers to come and pick you up. The driver takes up a seat for the return trip to Kalkan so they usually quote that 3 people can share a car. Fitting 4 with luggage can sometimes be difficult.

Vans of various (8/12 people) sizes are available from some agents.

4WDs can also be hired.

Scooter Hire

Many agents also rent out scooters. As a guide price you should expect to pay about £10 per day.

Dolmus (pronounced Dollmoosh)

Be adventurous. These local mini buses are tourist friendly. They are cheap and run regularly to various towns and beaches all along the coast. You can catch them from the main bus stops in the towns or from the road side when you see them passing. They are reasonably regular depending on the destination and cost practically nothing. There is also a timetable available to the various destinations. Go to the main bus stops and you find assistance soon enough.

Excursions to the many Lycian sites can be arranged locally.

 

Airport Transfers from Dalaman Airport

Cars fits 3 people and generally cost about £80 return

The driver takes up a seat so they usually quote that 3 people can share a car. Fitting 4 with luggage can sometimes be difficult.

Van suitable for 10 will cost about £120 return

There are bigger and smaller vans available so make sure that you get one that will fit your party and their luggage.
